Taking body and painting as her initial points of departure, Maria Wæhrens works through many expressions in the field between queer thoughts and the expressive in an open process. She is guided by an inner mental power and her works are very personal and insist on a material presence.
In her works and constructions Maria Wæhrens investigates gender, power, hierarchy and the patterns that arise and are passed on in the family and in society at large. These constructions are examined in her works and through her working method - the raw and the unedited are allowed to fill and create a documentary and vibrant expression. In her artistic work Maria Wæhrens works with automatic drawings, heavy materials and light paintings without any special rules or guidelines. The stroke is direct and can sometimes seem brutal.
Maria Wæhrens is educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. She studied painting at the school of Professor Ursula Reuter Christiansen. Maria Wæhrens has received several grants for her very talented artistic work, among others the Danish Arts Foundation's work grant, Grosserer L.F. Foghs Foundation and The Academy Council. In Denmark she has exhibited at for instance Møstings House, The Nivaagaard Collection, Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art and Kunsthal NORD. In 2017 she participated at the exhibition “Between us”, Lviv National Art Gallery, Ukraine.
